How to get cited in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity

How to get cited in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity (WhiteLinko blog banner)

To get cited in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, a website must first be crawlable and indexed. Each target page must then answer one question directly in its opening 40–60 words, support that answer with specific numbers, dates and tables, and be mentioned consistently on other trusted websites.

There is no special file, schema type or submission that guarantees a citation. Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that the same core ranking and quality systems apply. The work below is therefore ordinary SEO done in the order AI systems reward: retrieval first, then a quotable answer, then corroboration.

AEO, GEO and AI Overviews are three different jobs

Term | What it means | What wins it

AEO — Answer Engine Optimisation | Structuring a page so an engine can lift a direct answer from it | A short, self-contained answer at the top of the page; question-shaped headings

GEO — Generative Engine Optimisation | Increasing how often generative tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity mention and cite a brand | Authority and corroboration: mentions, reviews and coverage on sites AI tools already trust

Google AI Overviews | AI-generated answers at the top of Google Search, with supporting links | Being indexed in Google, ranking on the underlying query, and giving a snippet-ready answer

Treating these as one trick is the most common mistake. A page can be perfectly structured for AEO and still never be cited under GEO if no other site mentions the brand. WhiteLinko works on all three together: technical retrieval, answer-first content, and off-site corroboration.

How AI systems choose which pages to cite

1. Retrieval. The system searches its index for pages that match the question. Each product uses a different source: Google AI Overviews use Google's index (Googlebot), ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot together with partner search data, and Perplexity uses PerplexityBot and live page fetches. A blocked or unindexed page cannot be chosen.

2. Extraction. The system lifts short, self-contained passages. A passage that names its subject, gives a complete answer in two or three sentences, and contains a number or a date is far easier to use than a vague paragraph that depends on the text above it.

3. Trust and corroboration. The system favours pages it can corroborate: a consistent brand identity, a named author, links to sources, original data, and mentions of the same brand on other credible sites, directories and review profiles.

The 7-step method WhiteLinko uses

1. Fix retrieval first. Confirm every important page is indexed in Google Search Console and in Bing Webmaster Tools, loads fast, renders its main content as text, and is linked from the homepage or a relevant service page.

2. Allow the search crawlers. In robots.txt, allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Allowing search crawlers is a separate decision from allowing training crawlers such as GPTBot.

3. Pick one question per page. Choose questions the business can answer better than competitors — ideally with its own data — and build one page for each. Do not put ten answers on one page.

4. Answer first, in 40–60 words. Put the complete answer directly under the heading, in plain declarative language, before any background or sales copy.

5. Prove it immediately. Follow the answer with a table, a numbered method, or a dated result. Specificity is what makes a passage worth citing over a competitor's general guide.

6. Make the brand one clear entity. Use the same name, description, logo and contact details on the website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directory listings such as Clutch and DesignRush, and add Organisation schema that ties them together.

7. Earn mentions where AI already looks. Publish guest posts and interviews that link to the specific answer page (not only the homepage), answer the same questions on LinkedIn and relevant forums under the founder's name, and ask clients for Google reviews that name the service and the city.

WhiteLinko's own starting point, stated honestly

WhiteLinko checked 20 queries in November 2026 — including “best SEO agency Dubai,” “SEO agency Lahore Pakistan,” “technical SEO audit checklist” and “AI search optimisation agency” — and found 0 confirmed AI Overview citations for whitelinko.com. Only the branded query “Whitelinko” ranked at position 1, for the homepage, and no subpage surfaced in the non-branded results. The live Google observation could not be completed in that check, so confidence is low: this is a failure to find, not proof that no citation exists anywhere.

That starting point is exactly why this page exists, and why the method above begins with indexation. A business cannot be cited for answers that sit on pages an AI system has not retrieved. WhiteLinko publishes its starting point because a provider that hides its own results has no basis for promising anyone else's.

What results look like when search is tied to revenue

WhiteLinko reports on enquiries and sales, not only on clicks. Three published case studies illustrate the kind of specific, dated proof that both buyers and AI systems can use:

Client | Result (as published by WhiteLinko) | Source system

Skincare brand in Pakistan (e-commerce) | PKR 32,904,103 total sales, +90% vs previous period; 18.7K orders, +57%; 42.6K Google clicks at 6.2% CTR, average position 5.4 | Shopify and Google Search Console

Dry herb vaporizer brand (e-commerce) | $113,201.69 total sales, +20% vs previous period; $0 spent on ads | Shopify

Aesthetic clinic in Zurich (local) | 8,227 Business Profile interactions, May–Oct 2026; 5,890 website clicks from the profile (72% of interactions); 8.18K organic Google clicks, 247K impressions | Google Business Profile and Search Console

Figures are as published on whitelinko.com. The Zurich interaction period is shown on the site as May–Oct 2026 with an asterisk; confirm the exact reporting period in the case study before quoting it to a client.

How long does it take to get cited?

A page must be crawled and indexed before any AI product can cite it, and each product refreshes on its own schedule — no AI company publishes a timeline. In practice, WhiteLinko plans for first citations on long-tail and own-data questions within 2–6 weeks of indexing, citations on competitive informational queries in 2–4 months, and citations on “best agency in [city]” queries in 3–6 months, and only where the underlying page also earns organic trust. Anyone who guarantees a citation date is selling a guarantee no one outside those companies can keep.

Frequently asked questions

Does llms.txt guarantee a citation?

No. A llms.txt file can help AI crawlers find a site's best pages — WhiteLinko maintains one at whitelinko.com/llms.txt, including an llms-full.txt and sitemap links — but no file guarantees selection. Indexation, answer quality and corroboration decide citations.

Do I need special schema to appear in AI Overviews?

No special schema is required. Google advises keeping structured data consistent with the visible text. Accurate Organisation, Article and FAQPage schema still help systems identify the entity and the question a page answers.

Should I block AI crawlers?

Blocking a search crawler (Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) removes the site from that product's citations. Blocking a training crawler is a separate choice and does not have to remove the site from search citations.

Why is my competitor cited and not me?

Usually one of three reasons: their page is indexed and yours is not, their opening answer is more direct and specific, or other trusted sites mention them more consistently. All three are fixable, in that order.
